Increasing impairments on corporate clients

4 out of the 15 large and medium-sized banks included in Danmarks Nationalbank's lending survey state that they have made further impairments on their corporate clients in the 4th quarter of 2023 compared to the 3rd quarter. The banks mention several reasons for the higher impairments, including pressure on companies' turnover and earnings, increase in the number of bankruptcies and the effect of the higher level of interest rates. All 4 banks expect impairments to increase further in the 1st quarter of 2024. In total, just under half of the 15 banks expect higher impairments on corporate clients in the 1st quarter of 2024.

Note:

In the lending survey, corporate clients cover 'Private non-financial companies' and 'Personally owned companies'. The net figure is derived from the banks' responses regarding losses and impairments.  The responses are based on a 5-point scale ranging from -100 to 100. -100 means "decreased significantly," -50 is "decreased slightly," 0 is "unchanged," 50 is "increased slightly," and 100 is "increased significantly." The banks' responses are weighted according to their respective market shares, resulting in a net figure for the response. Find chart data in the Statbank.
