Increasing loan demand among private customers
Banks and mortgage institutions in Danmarks Nationalbank’s lending survey report an overall increase in loan demand from their existing private customers in the 4th quarter of 2024. This statement is supported by the recent rise in the value of loans disbursed to Danish private customers. In the first two months of the 4th quarter, an average of kr. 39.8 billion in loans was disbursed per month, compared to kr. 30.6 billion in the 3rd quarter. The institutions attribute the higher loan demand to falling lending rates and increased activity in the housing market. Approximately one-third of the institutions expect loan demand to increase further in the 1st quarter of 2025, while the remaining institutions expect loan demand to remain at the level of the 4th quarter.
Loan demand increased at the end of 2024
Note:
The Danmarks Nationalbank's lending survey includes 19 of the largest banks and mortgage credit institutions in Denmark. The net figure is calculated based on the institutes' response to the loan demand. The responses are based on a 5-point scale ranging from -100 to 100. -100 means "decreased significantly," -50 is "decreased slightly," 0 is "unchanged," 50 is "increased slightly," and 100 is "increased significantly." The banks' responses are weighted according to their respective market shares, resulting in a net figure for the response. In the lending survey, private customers are "Employees, retirees, etc.".
