New detailed statistics for banking and mortgage debt

Danmarks Nationalbank is publishing a new statistic for banking and mortgage lending based on microdata reported by banks and mortgage credit institutions. The statistics contain data on outstanding nominal amounts, as well as the number of loans and borrowers for various types of loans from mortgage credit institutions and the largest banks to Danish households and corporations. The statistics contain data dating back to the 1st quarter of 2020 and will be updated on a quarterly basis.

Distribution of Danish corporations and households’ loans

For the first time, distributional figures for Danish corporations and households’ loans will be published in Danmarks Nationalbank’s Statbank. It is possible to explore the distributions of various combinations of dimensions such as sector, type of instrument, interest rate type, and instalment.

For instance, it is now possible to look at the distribution of Danish private customers’ mortgage debt. Calculated per loan, the typical outstanding nominal amount (median) for a mortgage loan was kr. 998,000 in the 1st quarter of 2024. Calculated per borrower, the typical outstanding nominal amount (median) was kr. 762,000. The difference between the two numbers is due to the fact that many private customers have joint loans, e.g. with their partner, and therefore the debt is shared between them.

Two methodologies provide more options

In the new tables all values are available for two different methodologies. The option calculated per loan looks at every single loan and the option calculated per borrower looks at each individual borrower. Given that a borrower can have more than one loan and several borrowers can have one joint loan, the two methodologies will yield different results. Read more about the methodologies and table contents in Sources and method on Danmarks Nationalbank’s website.

As an example, Chart 2 shows that the typical outstanding nominal amount for Danish private customers’ fixed interest rate mortgage debt without instalments is kr. 1,320,000 when calculated per loan and kr. 874,000 when calculated per borrower. In comparison these numbers ate just kr. 830,000 and kr. 577,000 respectively for the same type of debt with instalments
