Money, foreign exchange and derivatives markets
Danmarks Nationalbank publishes two statistics on the money, foreign exchange and derivatives markets. One is a monthly statistics of turnover in the Danish foreign exchange and money market. The other is a survey of the Danish foreign exchange and derivatives market, which Danmarks Nationalbank conducts every three years in collaboration with the Bank for International Settlements, BIS.
Foreign exchange and money market statistics (FXMMSR)
Danmarks Nationalbank has since April 2023 published foreign exchange and money market statistics. The statistics, which are based on daily reports from the 9 largest banks in Denmark, show the turnover in the Danish foreign exchange and money market month by month, distributed on financial instruments and sectors. The daily reports from the banking institutions are used by Danmarks Nationalbank to support the financial stability, monitor the development of the foreign exchange market in kroner and to follow the transmission of monetary policy in Denmark. The statistics are published on the 15th bank day of each month and are available via the Statbank. You can read more about the content of the statistics here.
The monthly foreign exchange and money market statistics replaces Danmarks Nationalbank's annual money market survey, which since 2012 has annually examined the turnover in money market transactions in kroner among banks in the second quarter. The figures can be found here.
Foreign exchange and derivatives market statistics (BIS survey)
Since 1989, Danmarks Nationalbank has collected data for the Danish foreign exchange and derivatives market every three years. This is done when the Bank for International Settlements, BIS, conducts a survey of the global foreign exchange and interest rate derivatives market in collaboration with several central banks worldwide. The survey has two elements: turnover and outstanding positions. The reporting banks are major banks and foreign exchange dealers (investment firms) with a trading desk in the country in question, i.e. branches of foreign banks are also included in the local data collection. The survey only deals with derivatives trading that does not take place on official exchanges, i.e. ‘over-the-counter’ (OTC) trading. All intragroup transactions conducted on market terms are included in the survey. The participating institutions report their total gross turnover for April. The foreign exchange component includes spot transactions, forward transactions, FX swaps and currency swaps. The derivatives component includes, among other things, interest rate swaps, FRAs and interest rate options. The individual instruments are described below.
