Payments

At Danmarks Nationalbank, we have two different payment statistics: a quarterly and a daily one. Each of these statistics provides its own insight into the Danish payment market.

The quarterly payment statistics

The quarerly payment statistics provide a general overview of the payment market in Denmark. The statistics include information on the use of payment cards, domestic and cross-border credit transfers, as well as a count of the number of ATMs and card terminals in Denmark. The data is collected from approximately 70 different parties, which include Danish banks, branches of foreign banks, payment institutions, payment card acquirers, and card terminal providers. The statistics have quarterly observations starting from the first quarter of 2016.

The daily payment statistics

The daily payment statistics focus on a specific part of the Danish payment market, namely payment card transactions in the payment card acquiring market in Denmark. The statistics include information on the daily value of payment card transactions processed through the payment card acquiring market in Denmark. The data is collected from six payment card acquirers in Denmark, and therefore, it is not a complete representation. The coverage rate is most recently estimated to be approximately 90 pct. The statistics have daily observations starting from Januar 1, 2019.
