Danmarks Nationalbank has signed an agreement with Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre – Real Casa de La Moneda of Spain regarding production of Danish coins for the next four years. The Spanish coin manufacturer will be responsible for producing coins depicting HM King Frederik X.
Danmarks Nationalbank has had an agreement with Mint of Finland for the production of Danish coins since 2017. The contract expired in 2024 and Danmarks Nationalbank initiated an EU tender to identify a new supplier of coins.
Real Casa de La Moneda was chosen because their bid was the most favourable overall. The evaluation criteria included price, quality, and corporate social responsibility (CSR).
The first order from Real Casa de La Moneda will be for 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 kroner coins, which will be updated with motifs depicting HM King Frederik X. The first coins from the Spanish manufacturer are expected to enter circulation in late 2025. Real Casa de La Moneda produces coins for several other countries, including Spanish euro coins.
"Danmarks Nationalbank has highly valued the good relationship with Mint of Finland. We now look forward to starting a new chapter with Real Casa de la Moneda and continuing the tradition of coin issuance with emphasis on high quality and reliability," says Niels Kaas, Chief Cashier at Danmarks Nationalbank.
