Danmarks Nationalbank’s three banknote exchange points are operated in collaboration with the nordic payment institution FOREX. In three of FOREX’s Danish exchange bureaus, a separate counter has been set up where citizens and businesses can exchange banknotes that will become invalid as a means of payment in banks and shops after 31 May 2025.
Therefore, the opening hours of the banknote exchange points are the same as the normal opening hours of the three FOREX exchange bureaus.
Only banknotes that become invalid after 31 May 2025 will be accepted at these banknote exchange points. Other banknotes cannot be exchanged at the banknote exchange points.
Until 31 May 2025, you can continue to pay with the invalid banknotes in shops or deposit them in your own bank account. From 1 June 2025 until 31 May 2026, Danmarks Nationalbank’s three banknote exchange points at FOREX are the only places where citizens and businesses can exchange the invalid banknotes.

Documentation requirements to prevent money laundering
Danmarks Nationalbank’s banknote exchange points are subject to the applicable anti-money laundering regulations. Therefore, if you want to exchange cash, there will be similar documentation requirements as at banks.
Cash exchange requires physical attendance, completion of a written declaration and presentation of photo ID. It will not be possible to send cash to Danmarks Nationalbank and other people cannot exchange the banknotes for you.
Exchange for cash or deposit it in your account
Private individuals can exchange up to kr. 5,000 for new banknotes. You can also choose to have the money deposited in your bank account. Amounts greater than kr. 5,000 will be transferred to your bank account. If you exchange the money on behalf of a business, the money will always be transferred to a bank account.
Exchanging for foreigners and businesses
The banknote exchange points will also serve foreign citizens and Danish and foreign companies that have Danish banknotes that become invalid.
These transactions will also be subject to anti-money laundering requirements and therefore require physical attendance, completion of a written declaration and presentation of photo identification.
Exchanging in Greenland and the Faroe Islands
In Greenland and the Faroe Islands, it will also be possible for Greenlandic and Faroese citizens to exchange banknotes from 1 June 2025 until 31 May 2026. That’s up to one year after the banknotes become invalid as a means of payment.
Further information about this option will be published on this page.
